This installation contains a series of paintings that mimic the layouts of Hong Kong tea shops (茶餐廳) and dim sum restaurants. Three large paintings depict a bakery counter, a table with customers, and a kitchen. The central painted table provides people with a place to sit and eat food, and a sound collage brings typical sounds from restaurants to break up the silence inside the gallery. Sundays are for Eating Out is inspired by the history of my Chinese relatives’ migration to the U.S. via Hong Kong, as well as the food that traveled with them.
